1  HRC Judging and Running Rules / Judges Roundtables / Re: Test Setup

Dang, here I thought I'd found something that Travis and I could agree on.   Wink   C'mon though Travis, there were no paddling feet anywhere in the article.  There was no acknowledgment that test setting is even an issue unless you consider "Finished dogs should be able to count to three" as direction on proper test setup.    undecided

I do agree that the  problem is much too complicated to expect answers to the problem in a magazine article.  It would be nice though if the Field Reps could at least let on that they realize it is an issue.  Clearly somebody has thought about it before as various steps (aimed primarily at symptoms rather than the actual problem) have been taken over the years to address it.  We had the "Judge's Recourse Policy" which gave field reps unprecedented authority to intervene and require changes to tests, we've had increased hoops for prospective judges to jump through -- the AA judge deal being one of them.  As you note, that didn't change anything.   There's good AA's and there's bad AA's.

More recently, there is the push for straightforward tests without much in the way of factors (often with a corresponding loss of hunting realism).  I guess the idea there is that if it is simple enough not even bad judges can mess it up.

Now, I keep reading of people who feel that the Hunt Committee should somehow be used to prevent bad setups -- this despite the fact that the rulebook spells out the roles of the Hunt Committee -- none of which include any role in test setting.

So somebody realizes that it is an issue.  The thing I don't understand then is why we can't simply acknowledge that test setting is a skill that requires a certain amount of training and then try to provide that training?  We spend 8+ hours at the judges/handlers seminar pouring through literally hundreds of Powerpoint slides.  In all that I think there are about 5-15 minutes and 1-3 slides that talk about test setup.  We could (and in my opinion, should) spend hours talking about wind, water, terrain, suction, interplay between marks, interplay between marks and blinds and on and on.  We don't though.  I've never understood why.

O.K., enough ranting.  I'll go back to lurking now.

Cowtown HRC has it's monthly meetings at Cabelas in Fort Worth the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 P.M.  Take a look at our website: www.cowtownhrc.com
We would love to have him come to a meeting, a training day, etc. and take a look at us.  I am a Director of Cowtown.  If you have any questions, let me know.

Not pointed at you Bill...... just askin.....

OK so I am admittedly poking a snake with a stick here......if you were on the HT committee and a judge set up a test you did not agree with what would you do?

If a pair of judges setup a Seasoned Test that I and the rest of the committee felt was over the top, We would question them as to what they are looking for with the test in question, how they plan on judging it. Then we would offer a few suggestions on some changes that should/need to be made.........

Quote from Mark Edwards on Today at 9:00am:
I would rather run under a "one dog" seasoned judge with some sense than many of the "multidog" trainers that still can't set up a test.  The worst seasoned test I have ever seen my poor wife ran was set up by two "pros" one of which with a big dawg truck, snazzy website, the works.  A 38 yard angled channel blind in a 6 yard wide channel, against a slight crossing wind, with a 10 yard dry exit.  Any dog that beached earlier than halfway or ran around the end got dropped.   Gimmie a one-dogger with a brain or a HT committee with some stones over that mess ANY day.   Free the one dog judge!!! Wink

That's the biggest thing right there

Years ago Paul Gray was running my dog R-O-C 'N' Moon Pie (Taduh's dam) in a finished test at Lake Charles. She had picked up the marks and we heard a bunch of rabbit dogs approaching, so Paul sat Pie at heal before sending her for the blind. The rabbit ran through the middle of the test and jumped sidways on to a clump of grass out in the water. The dogs came along the trail and hunted all over for that rabbit, finally moving on out of the area. Paul sent Pie after the blind which she did nicely, then Paul asked the judges for extra credit for "honoring" a dozen Beagles. No credit given, just a pass. Some where there is a video of the whole thing, heaven only knows where now. Bill
Oh! After the dogs left, the rabbit returned to land and left, Pie did not follow.

I liked the old background color better.
There's not enough contrast with the new color scheme. It looks a little washed out to me.
